› WINE - TASTING NOTESLustau Amontillado Sherry (half bottle) A dark gold colour with glints of green, this fine sherry has a wonderful clean and nutty nose. The intense flavour leaves a little tingle on the tongue and a flavour that goes on for ever. Food Match = pre-dinner drinks with nibbles Lustau Fino Sherry (half bottle) Paler, younger, fresher and fruitier than the amontillado, this is a super quality wine, bursting with toasted almond flavours. Great texture on the palate and great length. Food Match = pre-dinner drinks with nibbles Niepoort LBV Port (half bottle) Niepoort's sherries have made waves in the past few years due to their richness coupled with an elegance and finesse. The sweet dark fruit flavours leave an exquisite taste in the mouth. Food Match = any cheese! Red Metal Merlot / Cabernet Franc 2004 Made from 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, the elegant ripe plum and summer berry flavours are immediately appealing. The tannins are very soft, giving a wine that's very drinkable now. Food Match = very food friendly, will go with anything! Baron de Ley Rioja Reserva A modern style of fruit-driven Rioja with ripe fruit flavours nicely seasoned with American oak. Strawberry and cedar-scented, it has a long, elegant finish. Food match = roast meats, game, stews & tapas Baron de Ley Rioja Club Privado Intense ruby red in colour with aromas of strawberry and vanilla, it has bucket-loads of juicy fruit on the palate. This is a great example of modern-style Spanish wine with universal appeal. Medium-bodied and instantly appealing, it clearly shows the quality of the ever-improving Toro region. Food match = textbook Bordeaux so compliments all food Lafont Menaut Blanc, Bordeaux A classy white Bordeaux that is soft and creamy in the mouth with just a delicate scent of vanilla from its ageing in oak barrels. A super wine with a long, lingering flavour. Food match = 70% Sauvignon so great with fish Chateau Sainte Marie Red Bordeaux A deep purple colour wiith a whole array of red fruit, toasty and spicy aromas. Flavours of blackcurrants and cherries follow with a vanilla aftertaste. Soft and generous with velvety tannins. Food match = beef, risotto, lamb, game, strong cheeses Chateau Sainte Marie White Bordeaux Made from a blend of the Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon grapes in the area around Bordeaux, this is a crisp and fresh-tasting white wine with a satisfyingly rich weight on the palate. It is soft in the mouth with a lovely lemony finish. Food match = perfect summer wine for seafood and fish Sancerre, Daniel Crochet A delicately soft and fragrant Sauvignon Blanc without the sharpness of some Sancerres. The subtle floral aromas and persistent pink grapefruit and kiwi flavours are therefore all the more remarkable. This is Sancerre made with a light touch. "This small family estate is just under 10 hectares in the communes of Bue and Sancerre. Grass is allowed to grow between vineyard rows and the soil is worked mechanically, reducing the need for herbicides and controlling vine yields, to increase the qulity of fruit. Muscadet de Sevre et Maine Sur Lie, Domaine St Martin A riper and fruitier modern style of Muscadet. The fresh lemony style of fruit is well backed-up with the complexity and richness from the crucial ageing on lees. Food match = a classic white for all manner of seafood Chablis, Domaine Azo This is a small Chablis estate now owned by the famous Jean Marc Brocard. The Brocard team tends the vines and makes the wine. Like all of his wines it has a wonderfully pure minerally flavour and is made without oak. Food match = grilled salmon, white meat, lobster, shell fish Chateauneuf-du-Pape La Calice de Saint Pierre Concentrated strawberry, black cherry and damson jam aromas on the nose lead to intense autumnal fruit flavours on the palate. There is bags of rich, dense fruity character and yet this wine is so, so soft, lush and ripe. Fantastic quality. Food match = grilled meats, game, hearty stews and casseroles Jean Valentin Champagne Selection Super Champagne from a small producer. Aromas of apricot, acacia blossom and honey lead to fresh floral flavours and a little toasty note in the background. £29.99 Pouilly Fuissé, Seguin Manuel, Burgundy The American market has an insatiable appetite for Pouilly Fuisse and this wine helps explain why. Full-bodied without being heavy, and intense without being over-rich, it has a creamy, savoury roast hazelnut character and real class. Food match = white meat, shellfish and seafood Bourgogne Rouge, Seguin Manuel, Burgundy Thibaut Marion makes wonderful hand-crafted wines on a small scale in the famous Cotes de Beaune region of Burgundy. This is super basic red burgundy. It has more character, more strawberry and cherry-flavoured fruit and more supple, smooth texture than you'd expect. Food match = red meat, pizza, pasta Jean Becker Riesling Hagenschlauf, Alsace Clean and crisp with that unmistakably pure, lime-like Riesling character. Such a fine and delicate wine and yet a flavour that seems to go on for ever. Food match = classic and dry, will match any good meal Blanc de Pacs, Pares Balta, Spain, White Made with the classic Cava grape varieties, this has musky aromas of ginger with orange, lime and apricot, which give this dry white wine an original, captivating character. Lovely zesty, tangy flavour. Food match = pizza, pasta, tapas, organic too! Mas Petit, Pares Balta, Spain, Red A very modern style of wine from this forward-thinking Catalan winery.
